Thursday, February 19, 2009:  Junior Thunder Rolls into Langley

The new Langley Thunder Junior 'A' Lacrosse franchise will launch its inaugural season in the new Langley Events Centre on Thursday, April 30th at 8:00 pm.

They’ll host the Port Coquitlam Saints in the first home game of 2009.

The word comes from Club President, Joe Wilmott, who led the successful effort to bring the Junior ‘A’ club to Langley from its former home in Surrey where they played under the name ‘Stickmen’.

"We see Langley as the emerging hub of lacrosse in the Fraser Valley and are excited about becoming one of the charter tenants in this great new facility." said Wilmott – after inspecting the new Events centre.

"With the excellent minor program and a WLA franchise already here in Langley, and with our intermediate A team next door in Abbotsford, we are positioned to draw on all south-of-the-Fraser communities for players and fans.” said Wilmott.

"We have the support of the Junior ‘A’ league and look forward, someday, to bringing the Minto Cup here." added Wilmott.

The Minto Cup is awarded annually after a week long tournament that brings together teams from across Canada in a showcase of some of the best lacrosse to be seen in the world in a week long playoff.

"The continuing growth of the professional NLL league and the expansion of interest in US college lacrosse and the general desire for more recreational opportunities all mean that Lacrosse will continue to grow in BC – which boasts one of the largest lacrosse programs in the world." said Wilmott.

"The young athletes who’ll wear the Langley Thunder colors will be looking to move on to College, professional and senior lacrosse. And they’ll be competing for those opportunities every moment they’re on that floor." he added.

The Langley Thunder Junior ‘A’ Club will compete against teams from Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, New Westminster, Burnaby, Nanaimo and Victoria.

The General Manager is Brock Rose and the head coach is Jamie Scott. The new club’s website is now under development at www.langleythunder.com.
