THUNDER JUNIOR “A” GET FIRST WIN AT HOME ON THURSDAY NIGHT

The Langley Jr. A Thunder needed overtime to defeat the Burnaby Lakers 10-7 and post their first win of the season Thursday evening in Langley.

The Thunder – fielding a roster that included several first-year and even some intermediate call-ups – opened fast and ran up a 3 goal lead early in the game.

Burnaby, a team also in a rebuilding phase, answered with their own three goal run to tie the score at 3-3 after one period.

In the second, the Thunder relied on goalkeeper Graham Chandler to keep them in the game, as they spent a total of 14 minutes in the penalty box. Chandler was called on to make 27 stops in the first two periods – and a total of 51 on the night. Burnaby used both goalies – Brodie MacDonald and Andrew Copeland – to make just 25 saves in the entire game.

The overtime was set up when Burnaby tied the score at 7 on a power play with less than 3:30 remaining. It was one of three they scored while the Thunder was short handed.

For the Thunder, Colten Hayes opened the O/T with an unassisted goal in the first minute. Reegan Comeault and Brandon Bull added two more for insurance. For this outstanding intermediate, Bull, it was his third of the game.

The Thunder penalties totaled 40 minutes, Burnaby totaled 34.

The win gives the Thunder a record of 1 win and 2 losses, including a 17-2 rout by the Coquitlam Adanacs on Wednesday night.

The Thunder will meet Burnaby again on Sunday evening and then will host Port Coquitlam Wednesday, May 13 at 7:30 at the Langley Events Centre.
