Uneven Performances Stall Langley Jr Thunders Comeback Bid

The reorganized Langley Jr Thunder played a pair of opponents to a draw – almost – in two weekend games that showed, again, the team has the talent to post a better record than it has.

Friday evening in Port Coquitlam the Thunder played a solid first period against the Saints, finishing just one goal down at 5-4. In the third period, they outscored Poco 4-2. The shots on goal for the first and third were even. A total of 28 shots for each club.

The problem was the second period. Langley lost its offensive bite and its defensive composure and watched the hosts score 9 goals, while the Thunder managed only one.

Brendan Gibson, Greg Mahoney, and callup Reegan Comeault each scored a pair in the unsuccessful cause.

On Saturday afternoon at home, Langley began by outshooting the Nanaimo Timbermen 46-30 in the first two periods and went into the third tied at 8-8. Led by recently appointed Captain Brendan Gibson with a four point performance, and a hat trick for Colton Porter, the Thunder dominated play for 40 minutes.

The Thunder play was also steady for the first half of the third period, during which Nanaimo went up by 1. Then, in an unusual flurry of three goals in just 24 seconds in the 14th minute, the teams were tied again at 10-10.

With about 6 minutes remaining, Langley appeared to tire and was unable to answer Nanaimo’s last three goals which created the final margin of Nanaimo’s 13-10 win.

The well-distributed scoring and more effective passing in both games showed the Thunder has talent capable of winning. Additionally, several intermediate callups put in strong performances. Reegan Comeault with 4 points and lone goals by both Brendan Bull and Michael Tebbutt in the games, underline the promise of the team.

The Thunder’s next home game is Friday, June 26 at 7:30 pm, when they host Delta at the Langley Events Centre.
