NOTED OLYMPIAN JOINS LANGLEY JR. A THUNDER
Olympic boxing medalist for Canada - Dale Walters - has joined the Langley Thunder Jr. 'A' Lacrosse Club, President Joe Willmott announced today.
Walters will focus on civic development of the club, which moved to Langley a year ago, from Surrey.
“I'm looking forward to meeting with civic and business leaders to introduce myself and the Jr. Thunder program. We're building toward hosting a national championship and we'd like Langley to join us in the bid. The Langley Events Centre is a wonderful venue for an awesome sport. It's more exciting than hockey. It's a great sport for speed, agility and toughness,” said Walters.
Walters learned the game as a youngster in Burnaby where he also was introduced to boxing. “But I found lacrosse a little too tough, so I devoted my efforts to boxing,” he reports.
He knows about toughness. Boxing for Canada in the 1984 Olympic Games he won a Bronze medal. Since then he's developed a downtown Vancouver athletic club and lounge and established a boxing-for-fitness program.
Walters has also been involved with a group of businessmen, including others supporting the Thunder Jr. 'A' program, who are exploring ways to re-establish a National Lacrosse League franchise in Vancouver.
Also joining the Thunder Jr. 'A' partnership is mining consultant, Brent Thompson of Vancouver.
