Phillips, Ickert protected by Thunder

by Gary Ahuja

Ahead of next month’s Western Lacrosse Association Junior Draft next month, the Langley Thunder have used their territorial exemption picks on Stuart Phillips and Cam Ickert.

Each of the seven Western Lacrosse Association teams are permitted to protect two players from their respective junior programs, while the Maple Ridge Burrards – who do not have a junior team – can chose two players who played their minor with the Ridge Meadows association.

The Thunder used their selections on Phillips, a right-handed forward, and Ickert, a left-handed defender.

Phillips was captain of Langley’s Junior A team prior to his trade last season at the BC Junior A Lacrosse League deadline to the Coquitlam Adanacs. In six games for Langley last summer, Phillips scored 14 goals and 31 points and won the John Urban Award as the BCJALL’s top graduating player, as well as earning a 2023 First Team All-Star award.

Ickert was drafted by Langley in 2019 in the first round (fourth overall). He was traded to New Westminster for the 2023 season.
