An early deficit was too much to overcome.

The Langley Thunder hit the road on Saturday night to face the Adanacs at Coquitlam Sports Centre in Western Lacrosse Association action, falling just short in their comeback bid in an 8-7 defeat.

Less than 11 minutes into the contest, Coquitlam had raced out to a 4-0 lead before the Thunder cut the deficit in half on goals from Max Semple — playing his first game since being acquired from the Adanacs — and Devin Pipher.

The Adanacs restored their four-goal advantage with goals 17 seconds apart to open the middle frame, making it 6-2. Langley responded by scoring three of the final four goals of the period as Connor Watson, Jon Phillips and Pipher each found the back of the net.

Coquitlam struck for what proved to be its final goal of the game at the 2:34 mark of the third period, taking an 8-5 lead. The Thunder mounted a late push with extra-attacker goals from Dante Kulas and Phillips. Phillips' second of the game came with just 57 seconds remaining, but Langley was unable to find the equalizer.

Kulas was named the game's second star after finishing with a goal and five points. Phillips added a pair of goals and four points, while goaltender Keegan Okino made 42 saves on 50 shots.

James Rahe (2-1) and Riley Isaacs (2-0) each scored twice for Coquitlam, while Christian Del Bianco turned aside 39 of 46 shots.

Langley now sits at 1-5, while Coquitlam improved to 3-2. The two teams will complete their home-and-home series on Wednesday (June 10) at 7:30 p.m. at Langley Events Centre.
