Dickson delivers late as Thunder edge Timbermen

by Gary Ahuja

Curtis Dickson played hero on Saturday night.

With his team down a man, Dickson fought off a defender and delivered the dagger, scoring the game-winning goal with 15 seconds to play to send the Langley Thunder to a 10-9 victory over the Nanaimo Timbermen in Western Lacrosse Association action at Nanaimo’s Frank Crane Arena.

Dickson was named first star following his two-goal, six-point performance as the Thunder improved to 2-1 on the season. Nanaimo saw their record slip to 2-3.

Langley led for most of the contest, surrendering the opening goal and then falling behind 9-8 just over eight minutes into the third period. But Chase Scanlan scored to tie the game at nine with 5:10 to play and then Dickson struck for the winner.

The Thunder offence came off the sticks of three players Saturday night as both Dane Dobbie and Chase Scanlan finished with four goals and one assist apiece. Scanlan leads Langley with 11 goals on the season.

The game also marked the Thunder debut of Frank Scigliano as the goaltender finished with 36 saves on 45 shots.

Nanaimo was led by four goals and five points from Jon Phillips while Zach Manns set up five goals with scoring one himself.

Both teams were deadly on the power play as Langley was a perfect 5-5 while Nanaimo was 5-for-6.

Final shots on goal were 45-43 for Nanaimo.

The teams will complete a home-and-home series on Wednesday, June 15 (7:00pm) at Langley Events Centre. For tickets, click here.
