A pair of empty-net goals thwarted the Langley Thunder comeback attempt on Wednesday night.
Langley’s Toru Morimatsu had pulled the Thunder to within a goal with just under five minutes remaining before the visiting Shamrocks took advantage of the empty net to score twice for the 13-10 final score in Western Lacrosse Association action at Langley Events Centre. The Thunder sit in fourth place at 4-5-0 and eight points with Victoria currently in second spot at 7-1-1 and 15 points.
The Thunder twice led by a goal at 3-2 (in the first period) and 5-4 (early in the second) before the Shamrocks scored four straight to take the lead for good.
Nathan Lam led the Langley offence with a hat trick to go along with two assists while Chase Scanlan had a team-high six points on a pair of goals and four helpers. Morimatsu (2-3) and Jon Phillips (2-1) both had two-goal games with Connor Robinson adding a goal and an assist.
Patrick Dodds paced the Shamrock attack with five goals and seven points with Andrew Kew adding one goal and five assists.
The Thunder are back in action on July 2 at 7:30pm when they host the Maple Ridge Burrards at Langley Events Centre. The game will feature a special pre-game jersey retirement ceremony for the organization’s all-time leading scorer, Rob Buchan.
As well, the team will be honouring select members of the organization as part of the Alumni Night in the first-period intermission.
