Game preview: Thunder get second crack at 'Bellies

For the second time this season, the Langley Thunder get set to host the New Westminster Salmonbellies as the two Western Lacrosse Association rivals square off at Langley Events Centre on June 19.

The teams played at Langley Events Centre back on May 29 with the visiting ‘Bellies scoring the 11-2 win as part of their 4-1 start to the Western Lacrosse Association season. The Thunder currently sit at 2-5 as they look for consecutive victories following a massive 18-11 win on June 16 over the Maple Ridge Burrards.

The game saw the Langley trio of Chase Scanlan, Charles Scanlan and Clay Scanlan earn the three stars as they combined for 14 goals and 31 points.

Chase Scanlan led the way with four goals and a dozen points while Charles Scanlan (5-5) and Clay Scanlan (5-4) had 10 and nine points, respectively. For the season, Chase leads the team in goals (14), assists (13) and points (27) with Clay second with 19 points and Charles third at 18. Chase Scanlan’s 14 goals are second in the WLA.

New Westminster bounced back from their first defeat of the season with a 15-5 road                      win over the Burnaby Lakers on June 14 at Bill Copeland Arena. Goaltender Neil Tyacke made 50 saves in the game as the Salmonbellies were outshot 55-47. Offensively, Tyson Gibson led the team with a hat trick and eight points while Ryan Martel scored four times as past of his six-point effort.

For the season, Will Malcom leads the entire WLA with 18 goals and is fourth with 32 points, although he is tops in points per game at 6.4.

On special teams, the New Westminster power play is connecting at a .433 clip while the Thunder check in at .412. Those rank second and third in the league, respectively. On the penalty kill, the Salmonbellies are third (.667) while Langley is fourth (.612) with the Thunder tied for the WLA lead with four short-handed goals.
