New season, same goal

Athleticism, grittiness and energy: three words head coach Ian Poole used to describe the 2025 version of his Langley Thunder senior A squad as they get set to embark on the Western Lacrosse Association season.

The 2024 team advanced to the WLA finals for a third consecutive season, even more impressive considering Langley started the campaign with just one victory in their first six games before rebounding to finish at 8-9-1 with their 17 points placing them in third spot.

“Last year taught me to stick to the process, battle through adversity and stay positive,” Poole said, reflecting on his first year as head coach. “We could have easily folded the tent last year after that tough start, but we stayed the course, looked within ourselves and just battled. We want to carry that into this season.”

Offensively, the team returns leading scorer Chase Scanlan (36 goals, 38 assists in 16 games) and captain Connor Robinson (12 goals, 24 goals) in 10 games and they are joined upfront by off-season acquisition Jon Phillips, who scored 22 goals and 48 points in 16 games.

At the other end of the floor, Reece Callies returns to Langley after taking last summer off, with Trent Kellner also expected to play a key role on defence. The Thunder also acquired Evan Messenger to help shore up the team’s back end.

“We have a ton of experience, and we expect these leaders to help guide some of the younger players in adjusting to a new team and a new league.,” Poole said.

“And Fans can expect a gritty, hard-working team with lots of energy and intensity, plus a never quit work ethic.”
