Shamrocks score late, edge Thunder

Cole Pickup broke a tie game with 69 seconds to play as the Victoria Shamrocks edged the Langley Thunder 12-11.
The Senior A lacrosse rivals were playing at Victoria's Q Centre on Friday night in Western Lacrosse Association action in the Shamrocks season opener. Langley saw its record fall to 1-1 with the loss.
The teams started slowly with Victoria leading 2-1 after a period before both offences woke up over the intermission, leading to a 6-6 score through 40 minutes. The Shamrocks would surge ahead in the third, leading 10-7 before the Thunder battled back to knot the score at 10.
Langley's Curtis Dickson (2+6) led all scorers with eight points while Dane Dobbie (4+3) and Robert Church (3+3) also had big games for the Thunder. Tristan Kirkham (1+1) and Jake Bowen (1+0) had the other Langley goals. Kyle Mooney made 40 saves for the Thunder.
Patrick Dodds (1+4), Thomas Vaesen (2+2), Jacob Ruest (2+2) and Liam Phillips (2+0) led the Shamrocks while Pete Dubenski stopped 38 of 49 Langley shots.
The Thunder are back in action on Wednesday, May 31 as they host the New Westminster Salmonbellies at Langley Events Centre. Game time is 7:30pm.
